A Little Think

Here's a quick little "fly by" to kick off your 2011: on New Year's Eve I choose a Bible verse as my New Year's Resolution. The idea is to live the verse, learn from it and be strengthened in your faith along the way. One year it was just four words: "Be anxious for nothing!" Easy to remember and use spur of the moment. I used it a lot...and still do. By way of explanation, here's a true story, which I found on the Cybersalt website: www.cybersalt.org/cleanlaugh-archive/5307.

My husband is a doctor, and he received an emergency call from a patient. She had a fly in her ear. He suggested an old home remedy. "Pour warm olive oil into your ear and lie down for a few minutes," he said. "When you lift your head the fly should emerge with the liquid." The patient thought that sounded like a good idea, but she still asked, "Into which ear should I pour the oil?"

I'm a Christian, which means I'm a follower of Jesus Christ. I get to know Him by reading the Bible, going to church, and having Christian friends who pretty much believe like I do...and some with whom I frequently beg to differ! Even so, I often simply lean on my own understanding of things, which the Bible advises against without laying it out before the Lord first. There's a verse from Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your paths." And what do I do? Like the lady with the warm oil asking which ear, I take my problem to God, then read a verse like this one and ask, "Where should I put your solution, your insights from the Bible, Lord?" Duh....into the part where you have the problem, He may as well say to me! I hope this "puts the bug in your ear," as the saying goes. Sometimes it's healthy to laugh at yourself and count on God to lighten the load!

So, into which ear will you let His Word of restoration come to you? One way is to pick a Bible verse, as I mentioned above, and ask the Lord to teach you through it as you apply it to your life all year long. The January Woman to Woman® shows all include references to Bible verses and concepts that have sustained my guests in difficult -- sometimes seemingly impossible -- situations. I know they'll encourage you. I expect they'll also fill you with Christ-confidence to make this an especially good 2011. Happy New Year!
