Dr. Andrew Root

Featured on Woman to Woman on February 26, 2011.

Dr. Andrew Root is an associate professor of youth and family ministry at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He works extensively in the professional youth ministry world. He is the author of Revisiting Relational Youth Ministry: From a Strategy of Influence to a Theology of Incarnation and has also written many articles and book chapters.

In 2010 Root published Children of Divorce, The: The Loss of Family as the Loss of Being (Youth, Family, and Culture), which examines, in part, why divorce causes so much strain and long-term distress for children of all ages. He explains that divorce causes children to question their core identity. Since a child is the product of the union of a mother and father, when that union ends, he or she experiences a baffling sense of loss of self -- a loss of his or her very sense of being. Root's efforts to assist children of divorce first addresses this fundamental experience. He examines the impact of divorce not only from a theological and spiritual perspective but also from a young person's perspective. It will benefit those who have experienced divorce and those who minister to children of divorce.

Root completed his bachelor of arts degree (1997) from Bethel College, St. Paul, Minn. He earned his master of divinity degree (2000) and a master of theology degree (2001) from Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif. He earned his doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary (2005).
